Childhood Bullying Prevention Overview

Did you know that:

  • 100% of chronic bullies have a permanent criminal record by the age of 24?
  • 90% of elementary students have been bullied by their peers?
  • Nearly 60% of elementary students have participated in some type of bullying in the past year?

Although these statistics might conjure up images of kids with guns in a shootout, like the Columbine tragedy in Colorado, bullying in the form of teasing, pushing, shoving, or hitting is easier to ignore.

These behaviors are a major problem in our schools. If we don’t do something to stop it, generations of youth will grow up with significant emotional and physical scars, or even worse be the victim of senseless violence or suicide.

Children's Health Foundation believes that bullying and cultural bias in schools can be reduced by empowering students with the necessary skills to break the cycle of mistreatment toward their peers. In support of The Colorado Trust’s state-wide Bullying Prevention Initiative, we began implementing the Safe School Ambassadors Program. Since 2005 Children’s Health Foundation has successfully created a climate of understanding and compassion among students in schools.
