Childhood School Nutrition Overview

If you aren’t angry about the junk food that is fed to our nation’s children each and every school day, then it is time to sit up and pay attention.

Childhood obesity is one of the most concerning health epidemics our country has ever seen. 1 in 3 children born in the year 2000 is at risk for developing Type 2 diabetes. If we don’t act now, this generation will be the first in modern history to have a shorter life expectancy than their parents due to diet-related illnesses.

The war against obesity rages on, from office kitchens to hospital cafeterias, but the Surgeon General suggests that schools are one of the most important places to effect change in our children’s eating habits. Through our school-based Lunch for Life Program, Children's Health Foundation supports healthy eating habits through affordable, delicious school lunches made from “real food.”

The goals of the Lunch for Life Program are to:

  • Combat childhood obesity.
  • Address healthy nutrition in schools.
  • Improve the quality of food served to students.
  • Provide an environment that improves student health, decreases disciplinary referrals, and increases test scores.
  • Facilitate discussion about these issues with legislators, schools, parents, and communities.
